Mark W. Rufolo, Partner

Mark Rufolo is a partner in the litigation department concentrating on complex civil and criminal litigation matters. Since joining the firm in June 2006, Mr. Rufolo's practice has included work on a high profile criminal defense securities fraud case, and an internal corporate investigation on behalf of a large publicly traded company involved in the medical device industry in response to a grand jury investigation being conducted by the Department of Justice Antitrust Division. Mr. Rufolo also handles complex civil litigation, including RICO and class-action related work.

 

Prior to joining Stern Kilcullen & Rufolo, Mr. Rufolo was an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey from 1990 to 2006, and served his last several years as Chief of the Organized Crime Strike Force. Mr. Rufolo handled RICO and complex white collar prosecutions, and as Chief, supervised the federal organized crime program in New Jersey, authorized and directed organized crime prosecutions, advised law enforcement agencies on legal and investigative strategy, supervised investigations, prosecutions and trials conducted by other prosecutors, and served as the confidential informant coordinator. Mr. Rufolo has conducted numerous trials in the Federal District Courts of New Jersey, and also tried cases in the Northern District of Georgia (Atlanta), and in Superior Court, New Jersey as a Special Deputy Attorney General. Mr. Rufolo has experience handling cases ranging from homicide to fraud and
tax cases, including sophisticated fraud prosecutions of Eastern European organized crime involvement in U.S. import / export businesses, a racketeering case related to construction of the Newark International Airport Monorail, a multi-million dollar embezzlement from an ERISA pension fund, and a labor racketeering case involving a large national trucking concern. Mr. Rufolo also served as an Assistant District Attorney in Kings County (Brooklyn), New York, where he last served as a Senior Trial Attorney supervising homicide investigations and prosecutions, and personally handling high profile and complex cases such as the trials of a triple murder and the murder of police officer killed in the line of duty. Mr. Rufolo tried numerous homicide and other felony cases in the state courts of New York.

 

Mr. Rufolo received his B.A. from the University of Virginia in 1977, and his J.D. from New England School of Law in Boston, Massachusetts in 1981, where he graduated Cum Laude. He received several prestigious awards while a federal prosecutor, and has lectured in Eastern Europe on criminal justice development as part of the Department of Justice, Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT) Program, and at the New Jersey Criminal Law Institute and other seminars and training programs on the subjects of organized crime, RICO, and trying a homicide case.

 

Mr. Rufolo is a member of the New York State Bar (1982), the New Jersey State Bar (1984), the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the District of New Jersey, and the District of Colorado.
